Timing Your Adventure: When to Catch the Magic

Ah, the age-old question: when is the perfect time to witness the splendor of early-blooming cherry blossoms at Oi Yume-no-sato Park? I have the insider scoop to help you time your visit just right!

Typically, the cherry blossoms at Oi Yume-no-sato Park begin to bloom in early to mid-February, offering a delightful preview of spring's arrival. However, Mother Nature likes to keep us on our toes, so it's always wise to keep a close eye on the weather and local bloom forecasts for the most accurate information. You can find general cherry blossom predictions at Japan Meteorological Corporation.

As a general rule of thumb, aim to visit during the peak blooming period, when the trees are adorned with a profusion of delicate pink petals. This year (2024) they were in full bloom the week of February 20-26. The window to see them in full bloom lasts only about 10 days, so move fast!

I recommend actively checking the google pin, searching β€œrecent posts” to see the most up-to-date blooms.

Another pro tip to ensure a majestic view of Mt. Fuji is to check the live feed on their youtube channel. There’s only a 40% chance of seeing Mt. Fuji, so be sure you check the forecasts ahead of time!

Oi Yume-no-sato Park offers unparalleled views of Japan's iconic peak, adding an extra layer of magic to your adventure.

Duration of Stay:

While a quick visit can offer a taste of the park's splendor, we recommend carving out a few hours to truly savor the experience. Lose yourself amidst the blooms, snap photos of Mt. Trust me, this is one adventure you won't want to miss!

Address: Kamimiyada Minamishitauramachi, Miura, Kanagawa 238-0101

When to see Early-Blooming Sakura:

Kawazu-zakura is a variety of cherry blossom (sakura) native to Japan. It is known for its early blooming period, typically starting in early February and lasting until early March, which is earlier than most other cherry blossom varieties. Kawazu-zakura trees produce vibrant pink flowers that cover the branches in dense clusters, creating a stunning display of color. These cherry blossoms are often larger and more fragrant than other varieties, making them a popular attraction for visitors during the early spring months in Japan.

This year I visited on February 20, 2024.

Getting There:

First things first, let's talk logistics. Getting to MiuraKaigan Station is a breeze. From Tokyo Station, hop on the Yamamoto Line Local towards Shibuya/ Shinjuku. Transfer at Shinagawa Station. Get on The Keikyu Main Line Limited Express bound for Misakiguchi Station, and from there, it's just a short stroll to the festival grounds. The station itself is nestled amidst stunning coastal scenery, making the journey as picturesque as the destination.

If you plan to drive, there is parking, but it will be limited.

What to Do:

Once you've arrived, prepare to be dazzled by a sea of delicate pink petals. The festival boasts a myriad of activities to keep you entertained, from traditional tea ceremonies under the blossoms to vibrant musical performances that celebrate the arrival of spring. Be sure to take a leisurely stroll along the festival grounds, where you'll encounter mesmerizing displays of cherry blossoms in full bloom. They have maps all around the station, and the local area, with the walking route to follow. The route is very intuitive - just follow the crowds!

What to Eat:

Now, let's talk about the food because no festival experience is complete without indulging in some local delicacies. Treat your taste buds to an array of mouthwatering treats, from freshly grilled seafood to savory street snacks. And don't forget to sip on some refreshing sakura-flavored beverages – the perfect way to toast to the season!

Accessibility for Wheelchairs and Strollers:

Now, let's talk about accessibility because everyone deserves a chance to partake in the sakura festivities. MiuraKaigan Station is equipped with ramps and elevators to facilitate easy access for individuals with wheelchairs or strollers. The festival grounds are also designed to be wheelchair-friendly, ensuring that everyone can fully enjoy the beauty of the cherry blossoms. There are a few areas you may need to take a detour to a park entrance due to stairs.

Additional Information about MiuraKaigan Station:

Before we wrap up, let's shine a spotlight on MiuraKaigan Station itself. Beyond its role as the gateway to the Sakura Festival, this charming station boasts a rich history and is worth exploring in its own right. Take a moment to admire the unique architecture and soak in the serene coastal views – you'll be glad you did!

So there you have it, folks – a sneak peek into the enchanting world of the MiuraKaigan Station Early-Blooming Sakura Festival. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor to Japan, this is one experience that promises to leave an indelible mark on your heart. So pack your bags, grab your camera, and get ready to immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of cherry blossoms in bloom!

5 Easy Eco-Swaps with MightyFix

5-EASY eco-swaps ANYONE can do!

EASYECOSWAPS

Can you believe how fast this year has gone by? It’s already the middle of October, and I’ve been reflecting on goals I set earlier this year. The biggest one was making eco-swaps in my home to reduce our waste, which is what I want to highlight today.

I want to share a part of my journey with you, and 5 of my favorite swaps I found with the help of MightyNest and their MightyFix subscription box. Keep reading for a special discount code :)

Immediately after signing the lease to our Japanese home, we were put into a trash organizing β€œcrash course” at our realtor’s office. She explained how we needed to separate our trash into 9 categories, showed us how to break down packages, wash them, then put them in their designated bins. It was quite overwhelming and a big adjustment at first!

I am faced with my own waste over, and over, and over again. It’s hard to explain what this experience was like, but when your trash starts piling up because you can only take it out on certain days, and you're managing 9 trash bins… you get desperate to find ways to reduce it. I’m embarrassed it took something like this, as an adult, to realize just how wasteful the life I was living was.

Now.. I don’t want this to come off as I am perfect in any way or an expert, but I truly think the swaps I have found with the help of the MightyFix are easy enough that ANYONE can try them!

Get your first Fix for $3 here!

Funny story: I found out about MightyFix on instagram through one of you! She saw me struggling and overwhelmed with options to swap, and recommended their services. Soon, my mother-in-law gifted us a year of the MightyFix. Once I got my first box, I knew I had to integrate them into my lifestyle and my content.

WHAT IS THE MIGHTYFIX?

The MightyFix is a monthly subscription box that helps you reduce single-use plastic and eliminate toxins from your home! It’s an effortless way to become mindful. They also have a full shop on MightyNest.com where you can add sustainable items to your existing subscription (or shop separately). You can ship everything at once to save on shipping (and reduce waste!), they support small businesses, and most importantly, support your journey in a non-judgemental way.

I feel supported by their team through my journey, and never feel judged. They put emphasis on any small change to seek progress, not perfection. It has made a huge impact on our lives and we use these items every single day.

Let’s talk about my favorite swaps that we discovered through the MightyFix

  1. REPLACE PAPER TOWELS with TIDY DISH CLOTHS! These are amazing and save about 3,000 single-use paper towels each year per person!!

  2. REPLACE DISH SOAP IN A PLASTIC BOTTLE with the MELIORA DISH SOAP BAR. We got this dish soap and a cedar tray in one of our Fixes and prefer it for so many reasons. Not only gets rid of plastic bottles, but supports a small business and lasts much longer.

  3. REPLACE ZIPLOCKS with STASHER SILICONE BAGS. These save so much money and single-use plastic. We use these for snacks, food while camping; I've even bought a larger size and used it to keep my phone safe during messy outdoor activities / weather. You can use these for so many things over and over again. PSST! They are really satisfying to open and close!

  4. REPLACE SPONGES AND PAPER TOWELS with SWEDISH DISHCLOTHS. Not only are the patterns on this aesthetically pleasing, but this swap saves money and is compostable at the end of its life cycle.

  5. REPLACE CHEMICAL CLEANERS with MELIORA ALL PURPOSE CLEANER: another favorite for us that we would not have found without the help of the MightyFix! This is an all-purpose cleaner that is non-toxic. When it runs out, you refill the glass bottle with soap flakes that come in a cardboard container. Another way to get rid of a household plastic item!

You can try the MightyFix for $3 by using this link or code ECOSWAPS at checkout on mightynest.com!

I hope you join me in making small changes in your home, too! It has been a lot of fun, and a great way to make a difference in small ways. Let's end this year with some positive changes, together!

xX, Caitlin

How I do my nails for $10

My biggest kept secret to my perfect manicure are THESE NAILS!!! I have been using these for YEARS off-and on, but it wasn’t until moving to Japan that these are how I’ve had to get a manicure. In Japan, a nail salon can run you $70 USD on average for a super basic gel manicure. I LOVE having my nails done, so this has been a beautifully cheap way for me to still have pretty hands. With everyone quarantined and normalizing press-on/glue-on nails, it seems appropriate for me to expose my favorite beauty hack/ secret :)))

If you want a shorter nails, I also like these. Anything from KISS is great!

**Disclaimer (I have to)! I am not a professional. I could be messing up my own nails, lol. I’m just telling you what works for me. You’re responsible for your own research.

  1. Do your nails after you shower or take a bath, while your hands are soft.

  2. After showering, immediately push cuticles back and trim them with tools like these.

  3. Use some type of alcohol / nail polish remover / nail cleaner to make sure there isn’t anything on your nails (like old polish). Be sure they are clean and dry.

  4. While they are clean, shape nails to make sure they are even.

  5. With a fine grain file (there’s one inside the package), file the entire surface of your nail. This adds texture, so when you glue them on, they stay. They do this at the salon before adding gel polish or tips - same idea!

  6. Match the fake nails to your real nail before gluing … set them out in order to stay organized (this step is optional.. you can easily do them as you go! I just find this to help the process go faster).

  7. Put 1-2 drops of glue on the FAKE NAIL near the base (bottom). Glue comes with the nails!

  8. Use the tip of the glue applicator to β€œpaint” and evenly distribute the glue on the inside of the fake nail. You only need most of the glue on the bottom half of the nail - not the tip.

  9. Place the nails on at an angle. Start by lining them up at the nail bed/cuticle area, lay them flat, checking for bubbles.

  10. Use your thumb to press the fake nail firmly, and hold for 5-10 seconds.

  11. Repeat until nails are done.

  12. Uses lotion!

  13. These last me 2-3 weeks!

If you get any superglue stuck on you or around your nail bed: keep Q-tips handy, soak them, and diligently get the glue off. Don’t stress out if they aren’t perfect the first time.. They take practice! Tag me in your pretty manicures!

xX - Caitlin

Cozy-Clothes Master List

I love wearing my husbands over-sized t-shirts and pants, but it’s getting to the point where I feel like a bum, and not myself, lol. It was fun the first few weeks! I’m not usually in the mood to wear jeans or a dress, so anything other than his clothes seems to be a happy medium. I can get dressed and feel put together without sacrificing my comfort! Add a little sass to my life, right? I thought it was a great opportunity to create a Cozy Clothes Master List! I asked for your recommendations and favorite PJs on Instagram stories, and had a TON of great feedback. I compiled most of them into a β€œCozy clothes master list” to share the knowledge (and will continue to add).

Each of these links are clickable, and will direct you to the β€œlounge-wear” landing page for that site/products. I included updated sales and promos, but if you notice a change, please comment below so I can update it :)) At the bottom I included things I bought today, and things I already own (like my ugg slippers… I also found a pair of dupes)!!

5 Tips for Learning a new Language + My Japanese textbooks

Practical tips for learning a new language.

I speak very beginner Japanese! I know learning a new language is intimidating and has it’s challenges; DON’T GIVE UP! Today, I’m sharing useful tips for learning another language. These strategies can be implemented into any language or host culture you are studying. Are you learning another language? Please share tips and strategies you love in the comments - use this as a sharing space. What has/ hasn’t worked for you?

  • Take lessons if you can! It’s hard for me to focus on my own, so having a teacher (Sensei) makes its easier and more exciting. Think about getting a private tutor or taking a languag as an elective at school. This is not an option for everyone, but a great way if you CAN make the investment.

    • LINKING MY TWO TEXTBOOKS HERE - these are the ones you see on my IG stories

      • This one is for lessons and vocabulary.

      • This one is our workbook, where you write and complete exercises.

      • If you can only get one, I recommend the first book, but they do go hand-in-hand! They are both beginner and elementary level :)

      • I just ordered this book as recommended by a follower to improve my verbs and conjugations.

  • Find someone to practice with. Do you know anyone who speaks the language you want to learn, or can you find one? Trade your time and help each other.

    • EX: I met a girl here who is interested in improving her English, and I need more practice outside of the class. We are about to start skype calling to help each other improve… bonus we will learn about each others cultures! This is a mutual transaction.

  • Watch movies, television, podcasts, youtube, anime, etc, in that language.

    • Anytime you have the opportunity to HEAR something in ** insert any language you are pursuing ** is an opportunity to learn. We usually put Japanese Netflix on with English subtitles! I don’t always enjoy the story-lines, but it has enhanced my ability to listen and understand normal speaking speeds. It also teaches you conversational dialect, which isn’t always something a book can give you! Regardless if you enjoy the show or not, you will pick up on SO much just by listening all the time.

      • On Netflix (for Japanese) I recommend any of the TERRACE HOUSE series! Great opportunity to learn about the Japanese social and dating life. It’s entertaining and wholesome.. very popular reality show in Japan.

  • Download APPS on your phone

    • We love the DR MOKU apps! We bought KATAKANA and HIRAGANA as a set since you can get them together as a deal. We learned both of these alphabets SO quickly. The app makes pictures out of the characters which makes them easy to identify.

    • We practiced these everyday until we got them right and would quiz each other. I played the audio for these in my car while driving and running errands instead of music or a podcast. I became obsessed with learning them until I got them right!

  • Discipline + Consistency

    • Depending on what is important to you - reading, writing, speaking, or all the above - discipline yourself to sit down and do it. You need to become obsessed until you get familiar. Eat, drink, sleep a new language! Listen to it and read it all the time! Train yourself to practice at LEAST 30 minutes a day. The way to learn is consistent exposure. The more you get used to hearing and speaking, the easier it gets, I promise!

I hope this helps!

Should I cancel my trip to Japan? : CORONAVIRUS, what you should know

Hey guys!! I’ve been getting an overwhelming amount of questions about the Coronavirus, and what I think about canceling trips / if you should risk visiting. I will not tell you what to do or not to do… because if something DOES happen, I will not be held responsible. What I CAN tell you is how you can protect yourself if you decide to come, and help provide resources for you to do your own research and make educated decisions. Another disclaimer… this is an actual virus that can be deadly, and you should take it seriously.

Summary of what happened and how it got to Japan

Coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China happened right before Chinese and Lunar New Year - the most popular time to travel! We know people can carry the virus for 2-3 weeks before showing any symptoms. By the time anyone realizes the severity of the virus, those infected are already traveling on planes, trains, etc… all over! (PS β€œEXPLAINED” on Netflix has a great episode called β€œThe Next Pandemic Explained”… which came out in 2019 and weirdly predicts the Coronavirus outbreak, just sayin’). That’s pretty much how it spread to fast. More people traveling = more people coming into contact with the virus = more people infected.

World Health Organization says

SYMPTOMS: include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

PREVENTION: regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.”

Let’s spit some facts about it now:

People who are young, older, or have weaker immune systems are more likely to die from the virus.

According to the Scientific American, β€œCoronavirus has led to more than 20,000 illnesses and 427 deaths in China, as well as more than 200 illnesses and two deaths outside of mainland China. But that’s nothing compared with the flu, also called influenza. In the U.S. alone, the flu has already caused an estimated 19 million illnesses, 180,000 hospitalizations and 10,000 deaths this season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).”

GREAT RESOURCES FOR YOU TO CHECK

Here is another great article provided by Mil.gov discussing what providers and patients need to know about the Coronavirus!

List of what’s closed in Japan HERE.

What you should do to prepare for your trip (if you decide to come)

  • TRAVEL INSURANCE!! Travel insurance does not always cover things like this.. IE β€œa new and rare x,y,z.” Read and understand your policies carefully so you know what you have rights to. (thank you @chiwilena for your help with this)!

  • Get masks! You’ll need on average 1-2 a day (if you need an idea of how many to pack). I would link some, but amazon has the prices jacked up high *eye roll.* Masks are not going to guarantee you won’t get the virus, but it sure as hell helps. If someone next to me was sneezing and coughing.. no thanks. I’ll be in my mask! Something is better than nothing. Be sure you get plenty of them BEFORE coming. A lot of places are sold out or rationing how many you can buy at a time. You will ABSOLUTELY want them for the plane since it is all recycled air (yikes).

  • DON’T TOUCH STUFF… seems obvious but you would be surprised what you touch not thinking about it. Keep your hands to yourself. Don’t put your hand on the escalator rails, stair rails, the rings (the things you hand on to over your head to stabilize yourself) on the train, don’t grab doors by the handle (unless you HAVE to obviously), don’t press elevator buttons - we used our elbows while traveling in Osaka. You can control what YOU touch out in public.. you can’t control if the person before you sneezes in their hand then grabs the poll on the train to stabilize themselves… then you come after them touching the same spot. Just don’t touch anything! You’ll be gucci my friend!

  • Wash your hands with hot soap and water any chance you get! With that being said - carry around hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes! I would include those in your packing list so you’re prepared before coming, and don’t have the stress of it looming on you when you arrive.

  • Take hot showers every day! I know that sounds so simple, but please do it :)

  • Be overly mindful and careful about eating street food. Most restaurants are going to be more than fine. Japanese are really careful about cross contamination and cleanliness, but that doesn’t mean you can trust everywhere you go and eat (just like where you are probably from).

  • Don’t wear your shoes inside. You will track so much bacteria inside! Take your shoes off at the door and leave them there.

  • Don’t put your jacket, bag, scarf, hat on the ground. Always find somewhere to hang these things. Even when you get home - don’t put them on your bed!

From our experience, we have not had any issue. Our daily life has not been effected, other than we are not traveling. Ultimately it is up to you to make an educated decision on what to do. Either way, be safe!

If you have more questions, please leave them in the comments. Best of luck on your adventure, whatever you decide!!

BEPPU, JAPAN CITY GUIDE

BEPPU, JAPAN VIRTUAL GUIDE

JAPAN’S MOST UNDERRATED CITY

BEPPU, JAPAN CITY GUIDE

Beppu is a hot spring city located in Oita Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. Beppu has the second largest concentration of hot springs in the entire world!

If you aren’t familiar with hot springs and onsen - they are geothermal natural β€œbaths,” or water with minerals good for your health. They are not only great for your skin, but help with stress and muscle pain. This makes Beppu the perfect place to relax and unwind.

That is not steam from industrial pipes, it’s steam from some of the 3,000 natural vents around the city. You might be wondering why this phenomenon is happening? About 60 miles south west of Beppu is Japan’s largest active volcano- Mount Aso. The city sits in a valley with volcanic ash, and… the hot springs are born (along with other geological reasons I don’t truly understand, but I’m glad they’re there anyway, lol)!

Beppu is such a unique experience to see and experience in person! Not all of the hot springs are meant for bathing; they are attractions, too! I had never heard of a β€œhot spring city,” and was enchanted by everything I was reading.

TATTOO FRIENDLY BEPPU

In Japan, tattoos are still considered to be taboo. They are associated with organized crime, like the Yakuza; it’s an older-generation way of thinking. Tattoos are becoming more normalized, but a lot of onsen and public bath houses (in Japan) do not allow tattoos. I have a very small tattoo, and have been asked to leave a facility before. I can attest, it's still very prominent.

Since Beppu is a hot spring city, a lot of people with tattoos have been worried about visiting and not having great experiences  - do not stress while visiting hot springs in Beppu! I will list the two we went to below, and here’s a great resource for tattoo friendly Japan. The mayor of Beppu is progressively making changes in town to make it a more accessible experience for foreigners. We never had issues finding our way in English, and always had friendly encounters with the locals. Beppu alone has over 100 tattoo friendly onsens to visit, making it one of the most inclusive cities in Japan!

RULES AND MANNERS AT AN ONSEN:

Just incase you want more information! Read this.

WHEN TO VISIT

Colder weather, like fall and winter; might be a personal preference :) Hot springs are super HOT! I love the contrast of freezing air and being in a warm environment. I couldn’t imagine being here in the summer to be honest.

WHO TO  VISIT WITH

Anyone you’re comfortable being naked with. Keep to smaller/more intimate groups! Seriously, that’s what you do in bath houses/ onsen… get naked and relax in front of strangers :)  There are public onsen where bathing suits are allowed (again this is a way some businesses are catering to foreigners) which is a great option if you’re shy!

If you’re going with a spouse or someone of the opposite sex and want to experience bath houses together…  do your research! I recommend private onsen so you are never separated, or be sure that the actual bath part is public and not separated into genders.

HOW WE GOT THERE

We drove to Beppu from Iwakuni, Japan. We took the toll roads which cost about $68 USD EACH way. It was a super easy drive, and was only 3 hours and 15 minutes.

You can get to Beppu via train as well! If you take the train, you will need to rent a car or plan to rely on taxi’s while visiting.

DAY 1

Private Onsen and lunch at ANA Intercontinental - Beppu.

$100/ hr for the private room - lunch was a buffet style $40 per person!  This was totally WORTH IT! This is not something I can say we will do all the time, but if you are going with girlfriends, your family, or alone with your significant other, or just want an experience like this just once - I think the pictures speak for itself! I have a quick 1 minute video with a tour of the onsen here. You can book here; ask for the private onsen/family room. ANA Intercontinental-Beppu opened in August 2019, and is one of the most stunning properties I have ever been to. You get panoramic views of Beppu from the top of the hill, and it makes for an incredible start to the weekend. You can stay the night here (it’s a hotel), we just opted for the spa services.

Hells of Beppu (you will see β€œJigoku” written on signs, this means β€œHell,” and also why you see little devils around the town).

This is a self guided walking tour to visit 7 large hot spring attractions. You can either buy tickets individually at each entrance or all at once. The price is about $3.80 per hot spring. Here’s a great article explaining what they are.

Check in to Airbnb

I do not recommend THIS  airbnb. I linked it so you know the area to look in, but I was not a fan of the place (if you follow me on IG you know how bad we slept)! I will leave a link here so you can get $55 off your first trip using Airbnb. Anyway, I loved the area we were in. You can walk to restaurants and cafes for breakfast and dinner. It was about 5 minutes walking from the main Beppu train station, so just search around that area.

**While searching on airbnb, you might see some locations advertising β€œprivate onsen” or β€œprivate hot spring”... these are legitimate. They had to build the city and neighborhoods around the hot springs, so naturally, some personal homes have them on their property; take advantage of that!

Dinner

We got dinner at a restaurant near the train station - we were really exhausted, so we grabbed something quick. It honestly wasn’t that great and they smoke inside (yuck). Sorry I can’t find the name :/ We use TRIPADVISOR to find all of our restaurants in Japan!

DAY 2

Breakfast

We walked to the train station to grab snacks from Lawsons and food from the bakery there (hard to miss)! I highly recommend the sugar dusted donuts!!!

Beppu Beach Sand Bath

I read so many great articles about this: This and this are fantastic to read over. This is the exact sand bath Jame’s May went to while in Beppu (amazon prime episode 6). We arrived at 11 am and received a 12pm slot, done by 1pm. It cost about $14 per person (including a towel). If you do not bring a towel BUY ONE! You will need it! No need to bring a change of clothes :)

Eat HELL STEAM CUISINE!

Along the walking tour you'll pass vendors selling local food using steam harnessed from the ground. It has a …. unique (sulfur) flavor! I wouldn’t say it’s bad, it’s just not my preference. The locals believe the steam enhances the natural  flavors of your food. This local cuisine is called Jigoku Mushi (Hell Steam Cuisine), and I encourage you to go for it!! When in Rome is what I say :) Did you happen to watch James May: Our Man in Japan, and see the restaurant he went to while in Beppu? We went to the same spot! Here’s the deets! 10/10 a great experience! I also have a section about it in my Beppu youtube video (virtual tour of Beppu).

Beppu Ropeway

Around 3pm, we finished our food and hopped in our car to go to the Beppu Ropeway! It was FREEZING this day!! Irrelevant, anyway…  it’s a beautiful experience and a very leisurely activity; you get to see all of Beppu below you! The aerial tram was about 10 minutes to get to the top. Once you get to the top, you can β€˜hike’ a paved path to the summit and explore around.

WHEN / HOW LONG TO VISIT JAPAN

When is the best time to visit Japan? How can I forecast the fall foliage and cherry blossoms? How long should our trip to Japan be? Find out here!

When is the best time to visit?

Personally, I recommend Mid/Late October - Mid/Late November. Avoid the summer heat and humidity at all costs. People underestimate how miserable it is here… there’s a reason you don’t see people taking β€œsummer vacations” to Japan. Summer is long and absolutely brutal. It also gets so hot that there isn’t a lot to do (festivals), so keep that in mind. Please come in autumn! I’ve never seen fall leaves as vibrant as I have here. Chasing foliage is a really exciting weekend activity for the Japanese - they even have a word for this outing - β€œmomijigari” 🍁 . In my experience, this is the BEST weather. It’s never too cold or too hot, which makes all the walking you’ll be doing more pleasant. My favorite places to see fall leaves are Kyoto and Miyajima. You can check the fall forecast here (when it gets closer).

Coming in the spring, specifically APRIL, would also be a unique opportunity to see the famous Sakura (cherry blossoms), but remember while planning your trip … it’s not promised. There are websites like this that forecast the bloom of the Sakura trees. Did you know that the blooming Sakura season only lasts 2 WEEKS??! Imagine planning your trip to see them and missing it by a few short days or weeks. I want you to be prepared. They bloom and fall quickly, so it would be hard to know if you would actually get to experience them while planning your trip.

How long should we visit Japan to experience what we want / make it worth it?

12 days is the perfect amount of time to hit major cities. If you can stay longer... I’m partial and would recommend staying as long as you can :) In this time frame you can easily fit Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, sprinkled with a few day trips in between. If you can extend your trip to visit places like Hiroshima and Miyajima, I highly recommend it!

What are your favorite cities?

KYOTO, TOKYO, OSAKA, MIYAJIMA, HIROSHIMA ... in that order :).. if you want to plan your visit chronologically, I would do Tokyo, Kyoto+Osaka, then Hiroshima + Miyajima with day trips planned in between (like Nara+ Kobe). Read this post for my ultimate guide to OSAKA + KYOTO.

KYOTO + OSAKA GUIDE

We started our trip in Osaka, but most people start theirs in Kyoto + only take a day trip to Osaka. Do whatever fits your schedule best. This itinerary is intended to be a rough idea for you to follow / understand what you can/can’t accomplish each day. Get your walking shoes ready!!!! If you have any questions, OR you have hidden restaurants / recommendations of things to do, please leave them in the comments to share with others! Thank you for your time :)

Why Visit Kyoto and Osaka?

Kyoto used to be the capital of Japan, and was the emperor’s residence. Kyoto is exactly where you want to be to see the blend of historical Japan, and how it has adapted to a modern world. β€œOver the centuries, Kyoto was destroyed by many wars and fires, but due to its exceptional historic value, the city was dropped from the list of target cities for the atomic bomb and escaped destruction during World War II. Countless temples, shrines and other historically priceless structures survive in the city today.” source.

You will notice more Japanese wearing traditional Kimono while visiting Kyoto. Since Kyoto is historically the nation's capital, and served for many years the center of the imperial world, it used to be a thriving textile industry. The textile and kimono industry was one of the biggest economics in Kyoto. There’s been a decline in Japan of people wearing Kimonos. In order to keep that culture alive, the city of Kyoto has put together programs offering discounts at temples (you have to pay to enter each one), and a few participating restaurants for those wearing kimonos. Foreigners are encouraged to participate - do not be shy if this is something you’ve wanted to do! I have done it twice, and each time been fully embraced for trying it. Wearing a Kimono is extremely patriotic and prideful, especially in Kyoto.

Osaka is really easy to visit from Kyoto! Depending on which train you take (there are different speeds) it can take 15-45 minutes to commute between the cities. This makes Osaka the perfect day trip, or 1 night stop-over. Osaka is known as a rebellious city in Japan; they tends to do their own thing, and I find it incredibly fascinating. For example: Japan walks and stands on the left side, but in Osaka you’ll notice they do everything on the right. It can be confusing, and I never know where to walk lol! They love making fun of other cities in Japan! Some cities specialize in a type of cookie or pastry, so Osaka will try to rival and recreate better versions of their desserts! Osaka lind of reminds me of an annoying sibling who doesn’t want to listen. I love osaka SO much because it really is so different from other cities I’ve visited. You can feel that they beat to the sound of their own drum. Osaka is a foodies dream! They are famous for many delicacies like okonomiyaki, takoyaki, and kobe beef I highly recommend at least a day trip here.. If you have the time, an overnight stay is even better.

WHERE WE STAYED IN OSAKA

Use this link to get $55 off your first stay with airbnb! We stayed at this apartment. It was in the BEST location. It’s in the heart of everything you want to be near for restaurants and nightlife. It was extremely safe and quiet at night even though it was in a busy area. It was perfect for two people to sleep and live comfortably. 3 or 4 people will be a bit cramped, but if you’re just using it as a crash pad.. it’s perfect. It was a LOT bigger than we thought it would be. I will likely book this every time I want to visit.

DAY 1 - OSAKA

  • BIG BREAKFAST at EGGS N THINGS

    • We ordered the huge pancakes with whip cream and salmon eggs Benedict. Get there early because the wait can be really long.

    • Eggs β€˜n Things Shinsaibashi (there’s many locations including Kyoto).

IMG_7864.jpeg
  • OSAKA CASTLE (museum inside)

  • ROOFTOP DRINKS AT THE LANDMARK SQUARE

    • It’s about $10 USD to get in, but that includes your beverage.

IMG_7868.jpeg
IMG_7872.jpeg

  • Dontonbori street for eating and exploring

    • Early/ Light dinner: Ajinoya for Osaka style Okonomiyaki! This place is AMAZING! There was a line, but we only waited 30 minutes and it was absolutely worth it. In Japan - if there’s a line, it means it’s good! Do not overorder food since you’ll be exploring and trying food on Dontonbori street.

      • 1-7-16 Namba, Chuo-ku, Osaka 542-0076, Osaka Prefecture

    • Head to the main boardwalk of Dotonbori (it runs parallel to the river). Walk around and eat all the yummy food! Here are my favorites!

      • Dumplings

      • Crab

      • Tacoyaki - this is a must try! I’m not overly excited about the food, but it's a must try while in Osaka. It’s one of their most famous local cuisines (you can’t miss it).

      • Kobe beef !! Its about $8 USD for 1 single sashimi, but… you have to try it! It’s worth every penny.

    • Take a photo in front of the Glico Man (an Osaka landmark)

    • Wander around the streets and go bar hopping until you’re ready to go home.

IMG_7867.jpeg

** OTHER OSAKA ATTRACTIONS - I HAVEN’T BEEN TO THESE YET **

  • UNIVERSAL STUDIOS - JAPAN (Osaka)

  • KUROMAN MARKET

  • POKEMON CENTER

  • SOLANIWA ONSEN SPA

  • RAMEN MUSEUM - watch my video here!

  • Secret spot: Hirakata T-Site BOOKSTORE (50 min away)…check this link for my amazing photo!

DAY 2 - OSAKA TO KYOTO

  • CHECK OUT

  • BREAKFAST  at Micasadeco & Cafe, get there when they open at 9am - it fills up! Vegan and Vegetarian friendly

    • We ordered matcha teas, ricotta pancakes, avocado toast

    • 1-2-8 Saiwaicho | Minatomachi 82 Bldg 1F, Naniwa, Osaka 556-0021, Osaka Prefecture

B3D1B554-FB31-46B6-8E86-338AB032C49D.JPG

  • TRAIN TO KYOTOOOO - get your tickets at the train station!.. They will help you get tickets if you do not have a JR Rail pass, just find the information desk. They speak English - do not be scared to ask a lot of questions.

  • MATCHA TEA CEREMONY book it for an earlier time, 12:45-2:00pm - they are SO nice! I’ve been here twice. Ask ahead of time about holding your luggage. They might help you if you do not have a lot, but be prepared to check your luggage at a public locker (at the train stations).

    • 373-26 Horiike-cho, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto 605-0038 JAPAN

tea ceremony (they offer to take your photos just like this at the end)

tea ceremony (they offer to take your photos just like this at the end)

  • Travel to airbnb. We booked this one - keep in mind it’s an 11 minute walk to the nearest station. I wouldn’t recommend this place if you have a lot of luggage or need to go by the airbnb a lot (kids). My friend and I stayed here, and had no complaints other than wishing it was closer to a train station.

  • AIRBNB CHECK-IN 3 PM (they cannot keep our luggage)

  • Dinner at your leisure! I would find a spot in your neighborhood. We heard a lot of great things about a place called FIRE RAMEN, but honestly, it was not good food. Don’t listen to tripadvisor.. listen to me LOL! I wouldn’t need to ever go again.

DAY 3 - KYOTO

  • Good walking shoe day!

  • Breakfast on-the-go. We popped by 7-eleven.

  • Take the train to Arashiyama (bamboo forest) and explore (following the crowds is the easiest thing to do)

BAMBOO FOREST

BAMBOO FOREST

  • Do not miss Okochi Sanso garden in the back!! IT IS AMAZING AND A HIDDEN GEM! By far my favorite garden - especially in the fall. I’ve never seen colors so vibrant in my life! It’s about $10 USD to visit, but it comes with a fresh matcha to enjoy in the garden :)

  • Walk to Monkey Park Iwatayama! My friend and I were slightly underwhelmed. If you don’t make it here, you aren’t really missing out on anything… they’re cute from afar, but if you don’t like germs… do not bother (LOL!)

    • 8 Genrokuyamacho, Nishikyo-ku, Kyoto 616-0022, Kyoto Prefecture

78627C8E-8480-4889-990E-962630114306.jpg

  • If you feel adventurous, rent a boat on the river - you cross this river and will see the boats for rent!

IMG_7873.jpeg

  • Evening Plans

  • Gion district - I recommend doing your research on the history of this amazing area. It’s incredible, and is the area where β€œMemoirs of a Geisha” takes place. I love roaming the streets hoping to see one :) I have not done one specifically, but if you can get a historical walking tour/ food tour in this are, I wish we had done it. I will be planning to do that my next visit to learn more about the area!

The streets of Gion

The streets of Gion

  • While in Gion, get a craft cocktail at this speakeasy - BAR ALCHEMIST. They’re technically the best craft cocktail I have had in Japan (not saying a lot) - it won’t be the best you’ve ever had, but the vibe is SO friendly, and it’s a quiet spot to end the day! It’s a library/study theme, and they have a huge list of drinks.

DAY 4 - KYOTO

  • Fushimi Inari Shrine - this is going to be a really busy area! Wear great walking shoes and go early to help avoid the crowds. I recommend walking the entire thing - it takes about 2.5 hours round trip to leisurely walk it. There are a few ramen restaurants and stops for water if you need to rest. Pro Tip for empty photos! The higher you go up the mountain, the less people there are :)

IMG_7865.jpeg

  • Nishiki Market - this is a historically famous market and is one of my favorite neighborhoods. Its trendy, hip, and has a lot of food + breweries. You’ll spend your time here eating, and plan to purchase souveniers here!

    • Aritsugu Nishiki Market - the most famous knife company in Japan - they were a supplier for the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and have a history of over 550 years! Read about them here.

      • If you are looking to purchase a gift for yourself or a loved one.. This is where you want to be! They will engrave the knife for you in katakana, sharpen it before you leave, teach you how to care for it, and package it with a stone which symbolically dulls the blade (otherwise gifting a knife might cut your ties with the recipient). I usually spend $150 on an β€œeverything” knife. They make great souvenirs, a gift for an in-law, or a wedding present. If you purchase a knife, you will need to check it with your luggage to get it home.

    • Ichihara Heibei Shōten - famous chopstick store

    • Snoopy Cafe

    • Ochanoko-Saisai Nishiki - the BEST cooking spices and rice toppings! Make sure you try the samples - these make fun gifts to take home to friends. We took home some of the sesame rice seasoning, and now we have to mail them home to our family because we have everyone addicted.

    • IPPUDO RAMEN! This place is worth the wait! I looooove the spicy ramen, and always, always, add on an order of the gyozo. They have seasonal ramen, and vegan options.

  • Nijo castle - If you love samurai, you need to visit this castle not too far away!

*** OTHER KYOTO ATTRACTIONS

  • Kinkaku-ji … β€œgolden temple”

  • Kiyomuzu-dera - historical temple with amazing views

  • Stroll the streets of Higashiyama

  • Ginkakuji

  • Ryoanji

  • Tenryuji Temple

  • Philosopher’s Path

  • Yasaka Shrine

Sentimental Gift Ideas

Hey everyone! I know giving gifts can be challenging, especially if you want to gift something with meaning behind it. I put this list together to make shopping a little easier for someone who has either lost a friend/loved one, or who has had a monumental event happen in their life (baby, wedding, big move, etc). If you have any other recommendations for this list please leave them in the comments so we can all share!

sentimental gift guide

1) Custom framing and shadow boxes of personal photos, a keepsake, or a collage. My husband kept 2 prayer cards from my dads funeral, and had them framed for me with a coin that was given to me by his best friend. If for any reason you attend a loved ones funeral, and want to do something incredibly personal for them, this is one of my most precious gifts! He kept 2 prayer cards so we could display the front and the back. This is REALLY personal, and one of my favorite sentimental gifts. You can do the same thing with newspaper or article clippings, a precious letter, etc!

2) Consider donating to a foundation in their honor! Example: My father passed away from a heart attack, so we’ve had family and friends donate to the American Heart Association. What if this person did not pass away from an illness, but they were passionate about animals? You can donate to a shelter, or rescue. If they cared about the environment - there’s foundations where you can plant a tree in their honor. There are many ways to keep their memories alive and still share it with their family and friends.

3) Write them a letter! Even if you don’t know what to say, even if you don’t get a response (sometimes it’s just mentally hard to), the act of kindness and love is the best gift.

4) A Map of the night sky - use code STAR20 to get 20% off! // This is a wonderful gift to celebrate a significant date. My sister gave this to us as a wedding gift, and we have it hanging in our loving room with this simple frame $15. It is a coordinates map of the night sky above the coordinates of where we said, β€œI DO.” This is a beautiful gift to memorialize engagements, births, birthdays, etc.

5) Mapiful is a great website to create maps for loved ones who have a favorite city! 20% off // This is a great gift to give a friend who has moved away from work (get them this map from their home town, or where you met). This is also a great gift for someone who loves traveling, and again… to celebrate special occasions like where someone was married or gave birth!

6) I adore these personalized map ornaments! These are only $15.

7) A personalized bracelet from Alex and Ani, $15-30! I was given a similar bracelet to this one, and it’s meant to represent my dad always being with me. I don’t wear it all the time, but I do keep it on my dresser as a constant reminder - I cried when I opened it, since the person gifting it to me also wrote a note. This is a sweet gift for a dog owner, childs initial, or anything else you might find sentimental! They have a lot of options.

8) A locket! I know it sounds cliche, but a locket has been something on my list for myself for a long time. I would love something simple to keep a photo of a loved one close to my heart. I love this brand, Gorjana, too! I own many pieces from them, and the quality is fantastic for the price.

Here are a few more timeless lockets at other price points depending on your budget. Personally, I would want something that I wouldn’t have to take off, and these are all on major Cyber Monday Sale 50-65% off! My advice would be to go ahead and gift them the locket with a photo or note already on one side :)

9) Oval Locket // was $890, now $311.50

10) Simple Starburst Locket // was $275, now $137.50

11) Circle locket with moon // was $300, now $150

sh!t you didn't know you needed - FOR THE GYM

my go-to secret items for the gym! These are my ride-or-die products at the gym. From headphones to deodorant and no cameltoe thongs -I have you covered!

heratlasgym.png
  1. SPORTS BRA - I have it in white and black, slowly collecting the colors as the years go one. I have a small chest, and it is great for low impact things, yet is comfortable enough for lounging around the house. It feels like butter, and most importantly, doesn’t compress my chest hard or leave marks on my skin from being too tight. I’ve fallen asleep in this countless times because it is so comfortable, and is my go-to for travel. It really does it all, and has been worth the $ ten times over. The padding was really odd - so I took it out and it lays beautifully on me! I also love it because the way it rests on my chest looks like I have boobs (lol). This is a must for comfort and style.

  2. NO CRIMP HAIR TIES by Invisibobble - don’t get a knock off brand, it’s not the same.. trust me. Get yourself these NOW!!! These hair ties STAY PUT, but also do not break, damage, pull, or β€œcrimp” your hair. These are so amazing, you need to trust me. I know $8 seems like a lot for hair ties, but I’ve had the same ones for YEARS! If they stretch out, just put them in the sun (I usually put them on the dashboard of my car) and they go back to their normal size.

  3. PERFECT GYM SOCKS BY Stance. I spent far too many years buying crappy socks from TJMaxx (which you can come across these periodically). They work as compression socks, and feel so comfortable. They never have a strong odor, and I love them for hiking, too. I’ve had the same pairs for years and they still have yet to stretch out on the ankle :)

  4. LAVANILA NATURAL SPORTS DEODORANT - ! I love this deodorant because it’s the only one that equally works and doesn’t cause buildup of deodorant in my armpits. I’m going to be super honest.. sometimes I like to just ADD more deodorant on, and this stuff is the shiz! PERK- It’s a natural deodorant!

  5. HYDROFLASK WATER BOTTLES are absolutely the best. There are certainly others on the market but nothing competes to the durability and hell my water bottles have survived while in my care.

  6. THESE HEADPHONES HAVE CHANGED MY LIFE AT THE GYM! I specifically linked these through Nordstrom since Nordstrom has amazing customer service! These are totally wireless, so they fit like ear plugs. My last headphones were just that - bluetooth/wireless, but they still had a wire that connected around the neck. I was constantly (accidentally) pulling them out, they would get caught in my shirt, ponytail, or rip out with a squat bar on my back. This is just my personal experience - my husband swears by these, which are more wallet friendly. Since these are totally wireless, I haven’t had a single product issue or malfunction at the gym. ALSO the sound is amazzzzing - I can’t hear any of the weird grunting over my sick beats (ps here’s my gym hype playlist!). The case that comes with them is the charging and protection case, i believe it charges them up to 10 hours - so they’re even perfect for travel. These are worth it… trust me.

  7. LEGGINGS - My ride or die gym leggings are these bad boys. They have just the right amount of compression that I feel secure at the gym for more high-intensity stuff, yet they still feel lightweight. I love these for hiking and outdoor activities, too! I have them in three colors because I love them SO much. Also this company has amazing customer service -free alterations, and if you product is ever damaged, they will work with you to find a solution.

  8. NO CAMELTOE THONGS by JIV Athletics! (use code HERATLAS15 for a gift from me to you!) These are EVERYTHING! This is specifically a gym item you didn’t know you needed. It will keep your lady parts cute so you don’t have to feel self-conscious anymore. I’ve actually totally replaced all my underwear with these because they are so much more comfortable than anything else I own.

  9. LORNA JANE ICONIC SWEAT TOWEL- This is where I get super specific (lol). Its LONG! I love that it’s actually a long and skinny towel, so when I use it on gym machinery, it ACTUALLY covers the whole back support pad. Its thick, fluffy, and lush - which I love because it feels gentle on my skin instead of harming it. It’s cute - like legit I don’t forget my own towel because I’m proud that I’m so detail oriented that I have a cute towel (whatever call me weird, but hey, it works).

  10. Cute + cozy pullover! I love this pullover because it’s SO soft, and seems to get better with every wash. I own it in the oatmeal color, but I’m planning on adding all the other neutrals to my collection. It’s perfect to throw on if you have to run errands at the gym and has a cute detailing on the side. The side seam is cut really high - right above the waist - so it’s flowy. I also just love wearing it around the house.

  11. These are hands-down MY FAVORITE GYM SHOE by Nike. I have the older version of these in white AND black ~ these are new-and-improved! Not only are they great for running, weights, boxing, and other types of physical activity… I also love them because they are CUTE! It is so hard to find a pair of black sneakers that are cute to wear outside the gym, right?! I love these for traveling and running errands -I also love that you can tie them, yet still slip therm off-and-on, so they’re also a great shoe to take to Pilates, yoga, or a spin class!
